Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What is U-Vault?
A. U-Vault is automated software to store "MY Documents" and "Desktop"
data (research papers, homework, drawings, pictures, and music) over the Internet
to a remote, secure storage facility.
Q: Why Internet Backup?
A: Old-fashioned backup solutions such as “burning” CD-ROMs or saving
files on another hard drive leaves your files exposed to the same threats as your
computer! Threats such as losing data due to crashes, natural disasters, theft and
viruses can only be avoided by storing data online with U-Vault powered by redBoomerang.
Q. How does U-Vault work?
A. The U-Vault program looks at all the files in your “backup set”
to see if anything is new or has changed since the last backup was performed. Then
it compresses those parts of your files, encrypts them for security, and automatically
sends that data through the Internet to a secure, off-site location.
Q. When does U-Vault run?
A. The standard account version of U-Vault is pre-configured to run
sometime between 8PM and 8AM. This time is randomized and automatically set when
you install the U-Vault program.
Q. Can U-Vault run at other times?
A. Yes. U-Vault can be configured to run anytime you like as long as
you are connected to the Internet. Also, under the Backup menu, there is an option
to Backup Now.
Q. Will U-Vault run when I am not on campus?
A. Yes, as long as you are connected to an Internet connection U-Vault
will continue to protect your documents. It is not dependent on your school’s network.
Q. What can U-Vault store off-site?
A. When you install U-Vault, it is automatically set to backup everything
from the “My Documents” folder and “My Desktop.” Although U-Vault is capable of
backing up any files on your computer, the pre-configured setting is limited to
these folders.
Q. How do I know my off-site backups are working?
A. Two ways; a log of your results is returned to the software after
each backup. You can click on the Logs tab and they are sorted by day. The second
way is via an email alert. An email can be sent to you after each backup with the
log information.
Q. What is involved in restoring information if it is lost from your computer?
A. The restore process for individual files is straight forward.
Just go to the Restore tab in your U-Vault program, find the files you want, select
what day you want to restore, and as long as you are connected to the Internet,
U-Vault will then automatically restore those files. If your machine is lost,
stolen, or needs to be re-imaged you will need to re-install the U-Vault software.
When you attempt to restore on a re-imaged machine, it will first retrieve your
backup history so you can select a full restore.
Q. Is there a limit to how much I can store off-site?
A. For a standard U-Vault account, there is a limit of 10GB however,
since U-Vault compresses your information before sending off-site, this could represent
much more in actual space.
Q. Can anyone see my information when it is off-site?
A. No. Your information remains encrypted. The only computer able to
retrieve your information is your computer with your U-Vault account. U-Vault’s
remote storage facility is equipped with military-grade security measures including
448-bit Blowfish encryption.
Q. What computers will U-Vault work on?
A. Currently only PCs are supported.
Q. Is there a cost to use U-Vault?
A. A standard U-Vault account with 10GB storage space and unlimited
transfers is only $99/year.
